What Makes a Good Candle?
S-E-A’s Chemical and Candle Laboratory Director, Bob Moss, presented on behalf of the National Candle Association to numerous retail organizations about the basics of candle composition and associated industry standards. The webinar (see link below) discusses various candle components and reveals how these components ultimately contribute to the fuel. The concept of a “quality” candle is then evaluated from the point of view of the consumer, retailer and manufacturer. Bob also reviews the current ASTM standards for candles, warning labels, containers and accessories. He closes with a discussion on candle failures he has seen in the lab and the importance of retailer/manufacturer communication with regard to testing protocols.

After years of planning, the new S-E-A Columbus and corporate campus is open for business. The impressive new facility at 7001 Buffalo Parkway sits on a 48-acre site next to the Anheuser-Busch brewery. The new four-building and testing campus boasts over 100,000 sq. ft. stretching across 13 acres. Occupying a prime sight location near I-71 and I-270, the new facility and adjacent land allow the company to better serve the legal, manufacturing and insurance industries through professional testing and analysis.
A central additive to the new facility is an array of progressive vehicle testing grounds, which include a 70,000 sq. ft. outdoor asphalt vehicle test pad, an off-road vehicle course, an earthen hill with various grades, and a rollover test pit. These new details will be used to better test a variety of vehicles and equipment on an elevated scale. Additionally, the facility houses an updated test sled facility that is considerably longer (at least 50%) than the previous version, enabling higher-speed testing and better control of the sled motion.
The campus also boasts expanded chemical and materials laboratories and candle testing facility, many exam rooms, and private bays for confidential testing on behalf of clients.
Automotive Testing Technology International describes vehicle-related additions to S-E-A’s new headquarters. An asphalt vehicle test pad, off-road vehicle course, earthen hill, rollover test pits, and a longer sled facility will enable S-E-A to offer a multitude of vehicle tests from the comfort of its own property.
