Biography

After receiving his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, Dr. Wiechel then received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University.

Prior to joining S-E-A in 1980, Dr. Wiechel gained experience in academia as both an instructor and researcher in mechanical and biomechanical engineering, and in industry as a mechanical engineer.

In the last 30 years Dr. Wiechel has become a nationally respected technical consultant in the areas of biomechanics, automotive impact mechanics and safety, injury causation, mechanical design, failure analysis, and human factors. Over this time he has also continued his efforts to delve into newly evolving science and technology with a voluminous history of peer reviewed publications.

His efforts in scientific research have also afforded him the opportunity to be an Adjunct Assistant Professor and Senior Research Scientist at The Ohio State University, Department of Mechanical Engineering. As an expert his testimony is well respected and sought after in all courts, having provided expert testimony in state and federal courts of law across the United States and its territories.

An active member of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), Dr. Wiechel currently is licensed in over 30 states and U.S. territories. His vast experience and scientific breadth is shown in the variety of professional societies in which he has membership, and often leadership roles. These include being a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and the International Traffic Medicine Association (ITMA).

He has held leadership positions as a technical session chairman within the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and as an active committee member within the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM). Dr. Wiechel’s outstanding reputation and standing within his community also led him to a previous position as Chairman and Voting Representative of the United States Advisory Group, International Standards Organization TC22/SC10/WG2 on Pedestrian Test Procedures.
