Dr. Biteau earned a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Physics from the University of Poitiers, France, as well as a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the Ecole Supérieure des Mines de Saint Etienne, France. He obtained his Ph.D. in Fire Safety Engineering from the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Dr. Biteau’s expertise at S-E-A includes the evaluation of the performance of fire safety and egress strategies in buildings and facilities, applying fire dynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics principles, and fire modeling. He investi-gates incidents involving fire protection and life-safety systems, such as water-based fire sprinkler systems; fire and smoke detection; alarm systems; special hazard fire-suppression systems; commercial cooking fire protection equipment, ventilation systems for commercial cooking operations, heating, ventilation, and cooling equipment; gas-piping systems, and gas-fired appliances and equipment. Dr. Biteau also conducts fires and explosions, origin and cause investigations, and code-compliance reviews involving residential, commercial, and industrial structures. He performs thermal and combustion failure analyses on consumer products and consumer electronics. He evaluates the fire performance of materials including, but not limited to, fabrics, polymers, insulation and building materials, paints, coatings, and combustible and flammable liquids, as well as lithium-ion batteries.
Dr. Biteau is a Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) and a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI). Before joining S-E-A, Dr. Biteau was employed as a Senior Engineer in the Thermal Sciences Practice group of a national forensic engineering firm. In this role, he was involved with fire detection and fire suppression systems failure analysis and performance assessment, fire and explosion computer modeling, heat transfer analyses, fire and explosions, origin and cause investigations, standards and codes consulting, and fire and flammability testing. Dr. Biteau also gained experience in the gas pipeline industry, assisting a large gas utility company with the implementation of a plan to validate the Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP) for its gas transmission lines and gas transmission stations.
